Benenden students are set to be represented at the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup after two sisters were selected to represent Spain.

Teresa and Catalina Burguera (pictured right) have been called up as Spain enter a team for the first time in the competition. They have been pitted against Japan, Germany, Latvia and Mexico in the group stages.

Both girls were thrilled to receive their call-ups.

“It is going to be an amazing experience and a privilege to play against the best players in the world whilst representing my country,” said Teresa, who is in the Sixth Form.

“It is an honour to be able represent my country and I am incredibly excited for this experience,” added Catalina, a Year 10.

Lacrosse at the School has been going from strength to strength recently. Benenden’s First Team were crowned National Schools Lacrosse Champions in March and two members of that team have been selected for the England U19 Lacrosse Squad.

Cat Gaunt, Head of Lacrosse at Benenden and herself a former member of the England Lacrosse Squad, was equally delighted for the sisters. ''What a fantastic opportunity for them,” she said. “Representing your country is such an achievement and I am certain they will remember this experience for the rest of their lives. I am very proud of both of them and how much they have grown as players over the past years.”

The 2017 FIL Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup will be hosted at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford between 12 July and 22 July and will see 25 nations will compete for the title of World Lacrosse Champions.
