Back in 2005, a couple of girls approached Benenden’s Bursar, an experienced rugby coach, with the idea of getting a rugby club and team going. They were set the challenge of recruiting enough girls to make this worthwhile, and within a short time, had a good number. A few had playing experience but many were new to the sport and keen to learn.

Twelve years later, women’s Rugby is still played here and is popular with a number of girls – some who are involved in other sports and some for whom this is their main sport. Since the departure of Nick Allen in 2015, Barry Imms has taken over the reins of coach which has seen the squad remain undefeated under his tenure.

Barry was heavily involved with the British Army Rugby League Women’s Squad which went on to win the Army Sports Team of the Year and had players promoted to the senior squads of Great Britain Rugby League, England Rugby League, Wales XV Rugby Union and Wales 7’s Rugby Union.

The club is open to anyone in Lower Fifth and above, whatever their level of experience. The girls train on Friday evenings on the new All Weather Pitch and some Sundays on Top Lax (to facilitate contact work). The clubs ethos is fast, fun and expansive attacking rugby with a stoic defence which suits the Benenden girls.

The squad usually enter two main competitions - the Rosslyn Park National Rugby 7’s and Kent Schools’ 7’s, as well as playing occasional fixtures. Over the Summer Term they have continued to train and build the strength in depth of the club as well as honing some of the basic skills and the future is looking very bright.
