24th August 2017

Benenden School is delighted to report another year of excellent achievements by girls in their GCSEs – with more than half of all results being graded at A*.

In results released today (Thursday, 24 August) 80 per cent of all grades were at A* or A.

Overall, a remarkable 53 per cent of all Benenden’s GCSEs were graded at A*, with 522 qualifications at this level. This is an improvement on last year’s performance of 51 per cent.

Thirty-eight girls (40 per cent of the year group) received nothing less than an A when they opened their results this morning.

Among these, one girl gained an incredible 13 GCSEs all at A*. Three others achieved 12 A*, five girls are celebrating 11 A* and five more have 10 A* grades each.

In addition, two girls’ Further Maths papers were so strong that they were each awarded Double A* - putting them in the top 10 per cent nationally.

Two girls also chose to take AS Levels in Philosophy alongside their GCSEs because they wanted to stretch themselves even further.

Headmistress Samantha Price said: “I am absolutely delighted by these results and am full of admiration and pride for the girls who thoroughly deserve this considerable level of success.

“The girls have worked exceptionally hard to achieve these results, and the efforts of staff cannot be understated, and everybody is understandably delighted.

“Here at Benenden, we offer A Complete Education, in which girls achieve their very best academically, but also experience a wide range of co-curricular opportunities alongside the enormous benefits of living in a boarding environment. These elements all combine to ensure girls are fully prepared for the workplace and for life, and today’s exam results demonstrate that this year’s GCSE cohort can look forward to great things in future.”

The well-publicised reforms to GCSEs – in which the traditional A* to E grades are being replaced by a numerical 9 to 1 system - are being phased in over four years, starting with English and Maths. None of Benenden’s results this year are affected, as the School offers the iGCSE in these subjects.

Contained within today’s results were some impressive subject performances:

  • 100 per cent of non-native Chinese speakers who took Chinese achieved A*
  • 97 per cent of all English Language results were A* or A
  • 95 per cent of all English Literature results were A* or A
  • 84 per cent of History results were A* or A
  • 82 per cent of Biology results were A* or A
  • In the first year of offering Computer Science, 79 per cent of all results were A* or A
  • 75 per cent of Maths results were A* or A

Also, each of the 19 girls who took the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification, in which girls write a dissertation-style essay and present their findings in public) achieved an A* or A.
