Baroness Greenfield

For most people, the brain and the basis of consciousness are fascinating if slightly daunting topics.  However, Baroness Greenfield who came to deliver her lecture on the Brain and the Future, not only enthralled but totally engaged the audience with her presentation.

Baroness Greenfield is Director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain (the first woman to hold that position) and Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Oxford, where she leads a multi-disciplinary team investigating neurodegenerative disorders.  In addition she is Director of the Oxford Centre for the Science of the Mind, exploring the physical basis of consciousness.

Looking at parts of the brain where consciousness resides and comparing individuals she put forward the argument that everyone's brain is totally unique because of the different experiences individuals are subjected to.  Even identical twins brains will differ and this will be down to nurture not nature.

A lively question and answer session followed the lecture and whether you were a budding scientist or not, a clearer understanding of the brain's reaction to the world around us left us all with an agenda to keep our minds as active and lively as long as we possibly can.
